These Are the Good Ol' Days

Did you ever feel like regardless of how hard you work you should be doing better?  The other day I was sitting in a restaurant having lunch by myself.  As usual I was in a hurry to get to my next destination.  My mind was inventorying all of the “important” things on my “to do” list.  I was probably trying to figure out how to improve my training business; how to attract new clients; how to improve the results for my existing clients; how to stretch my time to get more done.  But just before I had time to get totally self-absorbed with my affairs a messenger was sent to my table to set me straight.

A man who looked like he was in his 30s approached my table from the left.  At first I didn’t pay too much attention to him.  I assumed he was going to walk past my table on his way to some other destination.  Judging by his attire, age and focused demeanor I formulated in my mind that he was probably the restaurant manager.  When he got to my table he reached across the table to fill the salt and pepper shakers.  Then, in a slurred voice he asked me “How are you today sir?”, as he proceeded to clean and fill the containers.  The slurred voice was a clear indication that he had some degree of mental retardation.

How many of us take our health for granted?  Physical health and mental health.  I know I do.  For me, this young man was sent to cross my path to remind me to NOT take for granted my health and well-being.  After our family and friends, our health is the most important gift that we have been given.  Even if our health is not perfect; even if our level of fitness is not the ultimate…  We still need to be grateful; you need not look far to find someone who is far worse off than you.

Like the employee in the restaurant, we need to get out of bed every day and make the best of the gifts that we have been given.  After getting past the rush of this Holiday Season, take some time out to be grateful for the many gifts you have, particularly your health.  You never know, these may BE the good ol’ days.
